Musicamp in the PENDEL Division is always exciting and this year was no exception.  In the absence of a special guest, the staff welcomed the campers, singing “Be our guest!  Be our guest!” the well known song from Beauty and the Beast.

This year’s theme was WISE UP! Every day, there was a devotional lesson based on a verse from the book of Proverbs.  Each verse had been set to music by Major Joanne Shade and arranged for band by Dr. Harold Burgmayer.  The Proverbs verses were supplemented by stories from the Bible and C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.  The campers and staff learned one of the six songs in daily gatherings and sang them in the finale.  Every song found a place in the hearts of those who sang them and they could be heard for the rest of the summer.

The Proverbs included:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
Proverbs 9:10

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but the Lord’s purpose prevails.” Proverbs 19:21

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up bones!” Proverbs 17:22

“Above all else guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life”
Proverbs 4:23

“Keep my commandments and live.  Keep my law as the apple of your eye.
Bind them upon your fingers and write them on the table of your heart” Proverbs 7:2-4

“Whoever finds me finds life and wins approval from the Lord”
Proverbs 8:35

Campers made incredible progress in all majors including band, voice, dance, timbrels, drama, piano, and guitar.  These classes were supplemented with chorus, music theory, and Bible study for everyone.

Somehow, during the day there was also time for camp activities, which are needed for fun and relaxation during this busy week.  Camp Ladore campers are treated to many program areas including horse riding, boating, farm, archery, high ropes, and swimming.

The majors were 4 bands, 3 drama classes, 3 dance classes, 2 guitar classes, a voice class, and a percussion ensemble.  For campers between age 7 and 10, there is Music-makers which gives them a chance to learn in several musical disciplines.  Every camper sings in one of six choruses.

One highlight of the week was the finale number “They Shall Come From The East” by Kevin Larsson in which every camper participated.  Each band and every piano student had a part to play.  When not playing, the campers sang the vocal part which was learned earlier in the week.  As the piece reached its climactic conclusion, the dance and drama majors formed a giant, fabric cross on the platform and the stage was flooded with campers.  This stunning performance was an expression of what it might look like when people from every walk of life “sit down in the Kingdom of God,” as it says in the song.  It was a fitting conclusion to what was a fun and meaningful week for all involved.
