Pendel Youth Music & Arts Rally
May 11, 2013
Lancaster PA
Report by Ronda Atwtaer

On a bright Saturday morning in May, the Lancaster Citadel Corps buzzed with the sound of music! From as young as six-years-old to as old as twenty-one, and from as far north as West Pittston, PA and as far south as Seaford, DE, young people arrived in perfect Salvation Army uniform to participate in Pendel Division's Youth Music and Arts Rally, including Star Search Play-offs.

Ten a.m. marked the start of the leaders' meeting. Category adjudicators and room controllers from several Pendel corps were eager to meet, greet, guide and encourage the young people who were still arriving. A united opening session in the chapel rounded up all soloists, groups, music leaders, parents, and corps supporters for a rousing welcome and prayer by Divisional Music Director Dr. Harold Burgmayer.

For the next four hours, (with lunch on rotation), young people lined the outsides of classroom doors, waiting their turns to perform, or sat nervously in chairs as their peers gave their best in singing, brass, piano, drama, or dance. Room controllers prayed with each performer and asked fun questions while the adjudicators looked for the heart in each performance, and afterwards, made notes and tallied scores.

New this year was an "Open Category" - a way to include and encourage older beginners, newcomers to the Star Search program, music students who opt to compete on with non-brass/piano instrument or using non-standardized music, or those who simply prefer to receive feedback without being scored. In short, the Open Category was created to make Star Search day more inclusive - a way to rally up the troops!

At about 2:00 p.m., all gathered in the chapel as the Pendel Youth Band and Chorus offered selections they'd been working on throughout the season. The group was very much an inspiration to the room full of young performers. Each participant received a colored ribbon, indicating Superior, Excellent, or Good, as well as a white participation ribbon for those in the unjudged category. The highest scorers in each category received a medal and were invited to perform at the territorial level. Sprinkled throughout the ceremony were solo offerings. A united singing company selection - "God's Love is Sufficient for Me" - led by Regional Music Director Lisa Collier, closed the ceremony and sent the 200+ congregation on their way.
