Star Lake Musicamp
August 8-16, 2015
Report by: Kelley Bowin

This past summer, twenty-three campers and five staff members from the Pendel Division attended Star Lake Territorial Music Camp. Special guest Andrew Mackereth, a renowned composer from The Salvation Army’s UK Territory, led Star Lake Band and Chorus, and presented the Word of God to the campers daily, with the week’s theme of “community.” Andrew’s exceptional leadership shone with his vibrant personality.

On Tuesday evening, two Pendel delegates participated in the Soloists Night Dinner Theatre. Ian Wettlaufer sang Make Me a Blessing (arr. Whitehouse), and Arren Boyd presented In the Love of Jesus (arr. Burgmayer) as a euphonium solo. At Wednesday night’s Preview Festival, every camper performed with their chorus and major track. On Thursday, the entire camp enjoyed a lunch cruise around New York City with perfect weather. A highlight was passing by Ellis Island and seeing the Statue of Liberty. For many, seeing Lady Liberty in person was an unforgettable experience.

Friday night’s Festival of Voices and Brass featured every chorus, the voice class, and Star Lake Band.  On Saturday, every group on camp performed again, this time as part of the Grand Finale Festival. This year, for the first time, the festival was live-streamed so people around the world were able to watch as the campers performed.

Sunday morning began with worship.  Incoming Pendel Divisional Music Director Gavin Whitehouse gave his testimony and Colonel William Bamford brought the message. All campers and staff divided into small groups and prayed for each other with prayers that will continue throughout the year. Following the service was the Awards Ceremony at which the Pendel Division was well-represented. The ceremony concluded with the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner as the Salvation Army and American flags were lowered, bringing an end to Star Lake Musicamp 2015.
