Corps Community Centers
The corps community center is the most basic service unit of The Salvation Army, providing worship, social services, and community center programming adapted to the needs of the local communities in which they are located. The Salvation Army operates 82 centers across Pennsylvania, providing a direct link to the children, teens, adults, senior citizens, and families we serve.
In keeping with The Salvation Army mission to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and to promote the alleviation of human suffering, center programs range from Sunday worship services, Bible Studies and Vacation Bible School to crisis alleviation, case management, feeding programs, and transitional housing programs. Other typical programs include activities for senior citizens, character-building recreational programs, leadership and life skills development, and much more.
Youth programs are a staple of our centers. Whether they are offered as an educational resource after-school or as a safe haven for families with working parents, all Salvation Army youth programs have an underlying goal to provide character development and spiritual growth for children and adolescents. Mentoring programs help enrich academic activities and build confidence within the children. While programs for at-risk youth not only provide a refuge from the streets, but also offer a positive outlook and encouragement so they are able to break the cycle of destructive lifestyles.
Since its inception, The Salvation Army has known that music is a powerful way to reach out to those most in need. That is why we continue to provide music and arts education programs for children and adults. For many, these programs provide artistic enrichment for individuals who are not otherwise afforded the opportunity to participate in such costly activities. The programs teach discipline and respect, but also provide many benefits to those who participate including instruction and the opportunity to make new friends and think positively about their futures and about their relationship with God.
No matter what our age, an active lifestyle filled with friends and laughter is a healthy lifestyle. With a multitude of activities and program, that is exactly what seniors are enjoying at Salvation Army centers. Many include weekly meetings featuring a variety of programs like crafts, board games, folk dancing performances, exercise classes, health screenings, devotions, refreshments, regularly scheduled trips, and informational presentations on financial, health, and community resources. Living alone is tough and can often be detrimental to a person’s health and well-being. The Salvation Army senior programs provide a welcoming community for everyone to come and just enjoy life.
Salvation Army centers enrich the quality of life and provide fellowship among members of the community, allowing individuals from different walks of life to find opportunities to learn, worship, and serve together. Our neighborhood focused activities and programs are motivated by our love of God and the desire to serve others, creating a spirit that makes everyone participating feel right at home.
